Wow! What a fantastic Winter Concert! Wakefield Youth Jazz Orchestra ‘kicked off and funked out’ a jam packed Cathedral with a selection of five newly commissioned pieces directed by Jo McCallum from Jazz North and WYJOs very own Stuart Wilkinson and Amanda Spalding. The set also featured a guest performance from international jazz guitarist Mike Walker. This was a brilliant contrast to Wakefield Youth Training Orchestra who beautifully entertained the audience as they entered the venue on what proved to be a spectacular showcase of some of Wakefield’s most talented young musicians.
The first half of the concert also gave a glorious sneak preview of the newly formed ManyVoices Adult Community Choir before concluding with a stunning performance from Wakefield Youth Choir directed by Geraldine Gaunt and Phil Needham.
The second half of the concert continued to wow the audience with a varied programme from Wakefield Youth Orchestra and their inspirational director Nick Meredith. Their pieces took up a cold wintery theme that included a medley from the disney film ‘Frozen’ and concluded with a spectacular version of the Samba from the movie ‘Happy Feet’. Check out the video below – From Rehearsal to Finale!
Val Jennings, Vice Principal of WMEH and coordinator of the concert said “I don’t think we have seen the cathedral as full for many years and as usual our young musicians rose to the occasion and truly entertained the masses!”
A big thanks to all of our talented young musicians, directors, instrumental teachers, parents, partners and supporters. You are the best!
