Wakefield Youth Jazz Orchestra is directed by Amanda Spalding and Joshua Ward and was established in 2004 by the then Head of Woodwind Roger Scorah to encourage young jazz musicians from across the Wakefield district to further develop their big band and improvising skills. Past members of the band have gone on to study Jazz at the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity College of Music establishing themselves firmly on the London Jazz scene. In 2011 and 2012 the band was successful in reaching the finals of the National Festival of Music for Youth and has performed alongside some of the country’s leading Big Bands and Jazz Orchestras. The band has now formed strong links with Wakefield Jazz and supported artists of international repute such as the Paul Booth Trio and the Brandon Allen/Quentin Collins Quartet.
