Wakefield Youth Orchestra was established in 1975 and has developed and evolved under a range of directors over the years. In the last few years it has continued to be an exciting outstanding premiere group under the directorship of Nick Meredith.
The Orchestra performs two major concerts per year in November and July. Concerts in the past have taken place in venues such as Bretton Hall, Castleford Civic Centre, Ossett Town Hall and Unity Hall. In recent years, to accommodate a larger audience, Wakefield Cathedral has been the beautiful home of this inspirational group of young musicians.
Entry to the Orchestra is generally by audition and/or recommendation by their instrumental teacher or Music Centre staff. Students also naturally move up from Wakefield Youth Training Orchestra which provides a natural progression route.
Rehearsals take place at Manygates Music Centre on Friday evenings between 6 – 8pm during term time.
If you are interseted in joining the orchestra then please contact Amanda Spalding (Assistant Principal) Aspalding@wakefield.gov.uk or contact the music office.
